Surfing Northern Peru
The good thing about surfing in northern Peru is the climate it is always sunny, 365 days out of the year. The bad news about Surfing Northern Peru is the scenery it is all desert similar to Baja California. Even though it sounds like its not the place to bring your girlfriend who wants to hang on the beach while you surf its actually really nice around the Mancora area. The only problem with this option is that there is only one wave
in Mancora so you really in need a car to get the good surf in Northern Peru. There are some world class surf spots around this area which break on both norths and souths but you need a surf guide and a car or you will be limited to the crowded, although very good surf spots.. The Surfing areas of Northern Peru are actually really close to the international airport in Guayaquil Ecuador and its only a few hours driving from Guayaquil, which makes it the closest international airport to the Surf in Northern Peru area.
Surfing in Peru is an amazing experience with long wrapping left points and strong offshore winds. The water temperature varies from the about 75 degrees in the Mancora area down to mid fifties in the Lima area during the winter. If you will be surfing Chicama or the Pacasmayo region I recommend using a 3-2 mm wetsuit and if you plan on surfing northern Peru you can either trunk it or use a spring suit. Around the peninsula of Talara the water tempature does drop so you will need a 3-2 mm wetsuit.
Peruvian surfers are very good and Peru has a long history of surfing so do not think that you will come down and be able to out surf them. The Lima area has thousands of surfers who dominate especially when it gets big. They are friendly but they take there surfing very seriously. The area outside of Lima is filled with good big surf but it is also filled with surfers. However, the good news is when the swell pumps which it does quite regularly a whole bunch of epic surf spots which are usually long lefts points all go off and the current means that a lot of people will either be paddling or walking back up the point so the crowd will not be that bad. The epic surf spots are in North and are the Peruvians favorites. Cabo Blanco, Lobitos, Panic Point, Organos, Mancora are just a few of the classic surfing points in the Northern part of Peru.
