Surfing in Galapagos is an amazing experience filled with wildlife,
great waves and low crowds. The water is clear and you are regularly
surfing with sea lions, turtles and iguanas. Galapagos gets both north
and south swells and the prevailing wind is offshore throughout most the
year. It truly is an amazing place with big open barrels and fun hot dog
waves depending on the size of the swell and the spots you choose.
Loberia compares to pipeline and Punta Carola is comparable to Nias. It
gets big on both north and south swells and the waves come in fast so
bring a big board. There are waves on all the islands and

Getting there
From the airport in Guayaquil, you will go to the Sheratan Hotel in
Guayaquil where you will spend the night and fly to Galapagos first
thing in the morning. The flight is 1 and 1-2 hours from Guayaquil to
San Cristobal Island, Galapagos. Immediately after landing on San
Cristobal Island your guide will take to one of series of four spots
depending on the swell conditions. You will have pleanty of time for to
surf the first day since your arrival is at about 11:00. Most of the
surf spots are located within a short taxi ride from the main town. The
main spots are Carola, El Canon, El Tongo, and the Loberia.
Galapagos
Weather and waves
Galapagos has very heavy surfing conditions and is only recommended for
experienced surfers. You should bring two boards, one over 7 feet and a
smaller board. The wind conditions are very good from November through
April and the water is similar to the water temperature in Hawaii. For
experienced surfers Galapagos is heaven with world class waves, diverse
marine life and beautiful beaches.
A spring suit and a vest are recommended if you get cold easily. The
water temperature is in the low to mid seventies.
