Introduction to Surfing in Ecuador

Imagine yourself riding perfect waves in warm tropical water, sipping tropical fruit drinks and partying all night on the beach. Beach fires and warm ocean swims at night are all part of the adventure. The coast of Ecuador is filled with beautiful beaches and very few people in the water surfing. From Montanita to Mompiche the coast has so much to offer in terms of surfing, exploring, whale watching, fishing, and diving. A very centralized area for surfing is Montanita. It is centrally located among many different waves. Its is close to Ayampe, Rio Chico, Puerto Cayo, Salinas, and Playas. All these areas have very good surfing areas.

Waves, Weather and Conditions in Ecuador

Ecuador has great waves, very little currents and the waves are not so big dangerous that you will be horrified. They are small to medium sized waves with good conditions for learning to surf. Surfing in Ecuador is really fun because there are many surfing beaches with different type of waves. In Ecuador there are beach breaks, reefs and points that are all very good for surfing. Some of the more well known spots are Montanita, San Mateo, Playas, Rio Chico, and Ayampe. However, there are many surfing spots that are very hard to find. The weather on the Ecuadorian Coast is very hot and sunny from November until the beginning of June. From June until November there are mixed sunny days with overcast marine layer but warm conditions. There are good waves all year. Most the year you can expect light off shores with tropical glassy conditions the rest of the day.

From La Serena on the northern central coast to Constitution on the south central coast, you´ll find every different type of wave condition to suit your fancy.

Surf Conditions and Weather in Chile

Chile has tons of great waves for learning to surf. For those of you who have grown up with cool water conditions you´ll feel right at home in the chilean surf. Chile, and all of South America offer a great variety of waves. From big, high performance breaks for the advanced surfer to fun beach breaks that are conducive to first timers who are interested in giving surfing a try while taking a break from all the other magnificent sightseeing opportunities Chile and South America has to offer.

Some of the best surf spots that are close to Santiago and good for learning are Reñaca in Viña del Mar, a beach break which offers good beginer waves and great nightlife all within walking distance from each other. Algarrobo which is just an hour and a half from Santiago and also has a great mixture of good surf and great nightlife.

Pichilemu offers the best of both worlds. It has surf that is ideal for learning and once you feel like you have the hang of it, you can venture out to the heavy breaks to test what you have learned from one of the best surf schools Ecuador
